Biography
Hi, I’m Zoey (Yun-Zhuo) Liu, LPCC (OH), LMHC (NY), and NCC. I hold a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine from Boston University. After completing my degree, I worked at a college counseling center in New York, where I earned my independent license in mental health counseling. Later, I moved to Ohio to pursue my doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision at Kent State University. My areas of focus include working with adults and couples, with a particular emphasis on trauma-informed care, LGBTQ+ populations, young adults, and sex-positive therapy.
In my counseling practice, I believe in helping clients shape their own life stories. My approach is based on constructive philosophy, meaning I’m here to support you in understanding and reshaping your personal narrative, rather than defining your journey for you. I also use a feminist approach, focusing on the challenges and environmental factors you may face before viewing your experiences as a problem. I understand that many struggles are simply "normal" reactions to difficult situations.
I bring additional experience from my time working on a sexual violence team, where I provided counseling and support to survivors of sexual violence. I've also worked with students who have IEPs related to Autism, Learning Disabilities, and Emotional Impairment, as well as individuals dealing with self-injury behavior, bipolar disorder, self-identity issues, relationship challenges, and anxiety.
As a bisexual Asian woman, I embrace my identity and the complexity of intersectionality, and I use my experiences to support others on their own journeys. Growing up in China and adapting to life in America has given me a unique perspective, and I’m actively involved in local organizations supporting the Asian community in Ohio. My advanced training includes certifications in mindfulness-informed therapy, counseling on access to lethal means, and biofeedback, which allow me to offer a well-rounded and thoughtful approach to mental health care.
